The Isle of Wight Academy volleyball team ran its record to 9-3 after a 1-1 week against Virginia Commonwealth Conference opponents.

The Chargers defeated Blessed Sacrament Huguenot School 3-1 Thursday, Oct. 7, after losing to Southampton Academy 3-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 5.

Against the Raiders, IWA dropped the first two games, 25-11 and 25-17, before nipping Southampton 29-27 in the third set. The Raiders claimed the match 25-21 in a decisive fourth set.

The Chargers claimed the first two games against Huguenot, 25-17 and 25-6, before dropping the third, 25-12, and then closing out the match, 25-12, in the fourth game.

Isle of Wight is in sixth place in the second poll of Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II teams. 

The team was set to play at home Tuesday, Oct. 12, versus Banner Christian School and Thursday, Oct. 14, versus Amelia Academy. All games are at 5 and 6 p.m.

The IWA football team had an unscheduled bye week after its game with Rappahannock County High School in Washington, Virginia, was canceled. The game will not be rescheduled. 

The Chargers square off this week with Norfolk Christian School when they travel to Norfolk for a 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, game.

IWA remains sixth in the most recent VISAA Division II football poll, with games remaining against Fuqua School, which is No. 3 in Division III, and Christchurch School, which is 0-4 in Division II.

The IWA cross country team won its meet with Southampton on Thursday, setting seven new personal records and eight course personal records.

The team also participated in the Smithfield Hog Jog race Saturday, Oct. 9, and won seven awards. Junior Hannah McClain finished in third place overall in the female division. 

Petra Cutler, Pierce Cutler and Zach Jackson each earned first place in their age groups, while freshman Jayce Joyner finished in second place in his group. Coach Margarita Castillo won her age group.

The team runs Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Milestat Invitational in Mechanicsville, where junior varsity and varsity runners will race.
