The Franklin Police Department has made an arrest after investigating threats to harm Franklin High School that were made on social media.

A Franklin Police press release stated that on Sept. 22 and 23, the department received numerous calls and social media messages advising it of threats to harm Franklin High School.

Franklin Police immediately began to investigate the social media threats while collaborating with high school administration to implement a plan to ensure the safety of students and staff, the release stated.

As a result of the Franklin Police Department Criminal Investigations Division’s investigative efforts, a 17-year-old student was arrested and taken into custody on Sept. 27 for one count of threat by writing or electronic message to kill or do harm.

The juvenile was detained in the Chesapeake Juvenile Service detention facility.

“The Franklin Police Department takes these threats very seriously and will continue to work with Franklin City Public Schools to ensure the safety of their students and staff while also working toward prosecution of all parties who may be involved,” officials said in the release.
