A student was taken into custody after an investigation at Franklin High School on Thursday, Sept. 23, regarding the possibility of a student with a weapon.

A Sept. 24 Franklin City Public Schools news release stated that Franklin Police were on-site at the school Thursday to assist school administration with the investigation.

Working collaboratively with the City of Franklin, the Franklin Police Department, Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police conducted a thorough sweep of the high school.

Based on the investigation, a 16-year-old student was taken into custody, the news release stated, adding that the student has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property, concealed weapons, and possession of a firearm underage 18.

A Sept. 23 release from the school division indicated that Franklin High School was on lockdown during the search and investigation and would remain on lockdown until it had been completed. The same release also noted that no one had been injured and that a call would go out to parents notifying them when the lockdown had been lifted.

School officials concluded the Sept. 24 release by stating, “Franklin City Public Schools would like to thank all of the law enforcement agencies involved, the City of Franklin, the Southampton County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and the FCPS staff for their assistance to ensure the safety and security of our students.”
