CHESAPEAKE – Jesse L. Bynum of Galberry Road, Chesapeake, departed his earthly life on Aug. 24, 2021 in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. On Nov. 29, 1944, he was born in Southampton County to the late Willie C. and Thelma Newsom Bynum.

Jesse courageously served in the United States Army. Upon an honorable discharge, he was gainfully employed as a crane operator with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. In 1999, he retired after 30 years of service. At an early age, he joined Mount Tabor Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pearlie L. Bynum; daughter, Tiffany Powell (Willie); sister, Angelnette Freeman (Alcedos); brothers, Willie C. Bynum (Teresa), Charlie Bynum, Michael Bynum; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Evelyn Mayfield and Angela Cross, nieces, nephews and extended family.

A public viewing will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. A service celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021 at 3 p.m. in White Oak Spring Baptist Church, 26125 Delaware Road, Franklin with the Rev. Melvin Wofford delivering the eulogy. The interment will be held at a later date in Albert G. Horton Veterans Cemetery. Masks are required during the viewing and celebration of life.
