A single-vehicle accident July 28 on Plank Road in Courtland resulted in a fatality.

Southampton County Sheriff’s Office’s press release stated that on July 28 at approximately 4:52 p.m., Southampton County deputies responded to a single-motor-vehicle accident on Plank Road near Farmers Grove.

The vehicle caught on fire when it crashed, police stated. Once the fire was out, the driver and only occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was transported to the Norfolk Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an official identification.

Deputies investigating the scene determined that the vehicle was travelling south on Plank Road when it left the road to the left and struck a tree. The exact cause of the accident was unknown as of late afternoon July 29, but neither speed nor alcohol was suspected of being a factor.
