Franklin High School’s track and field program will be represented at the state meet by its boys 4-by-100-meter relay team and by Kaden Bailey in the boys 200-meter dash after they qualified June 9 in the Class 1 Region B East Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

For the first time, Franklin track coaches hosted the regional meet at the track and field athletic complex at Franklin High School. 

Speaking on behalf of the track coaches, Mona Sumblin was pleased that FHS was able to be the host of the event and voiced much appreciation to all of the track officials from various schools and volunteers that came to assist in the running of the very organized event.

The Broncos 4-by-100-meter relay team of Dae’Mari Holden, Myrone Rawlings, Darius Eley and Kaden Bailey was the runner-up in the event. These young men will also compete in the Virginia High School League Class 1 State Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held at James Madison University on June 18.

Bailey also placed fourth in the boys 200-meter dash at regionals to qualify for states, improving his personal-best record to 24.03 seconds. He placed sixth in the boys 100-meter dash, improving his personal-best record to 11.64 seconds.

Naziyah Turner, of the Lady Broncos, improved her personal-best record to 23 feet, 3 inches in the girls shot put.

Markelyn Fenner knocked off a hundredth of a second in the boys 300-meter intermediate hurdles, improving his personal-best record to 54.15 seconds.

Jaylon Santiful just missed placing fourth and competing in the state tournament in the boys high jump. Santiful and a competitor from Riverheads High School both jumped 5 feet, 6 inches, but the Riverheads competitor edged Santiful out for fourth because he had fewer attempts at that height. This height was also a personal best for Santiful.

Jaylin Bailey also just missed an opportunity to compete at the state level, finishing fifth in the boys discus throw.
