Franklin City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Tamara Sterling shared through a community letter that a parent was on a school property with a visible weapon May 20. She stated the parent was immediately redirected to leave the school property and informed that school zones are Gun and Weapon Free Zones.
Authorities were notified and will follow through accordingly, she wrote.
“The safety and security of our students are our highest priority,” she stated.
Sterling said there were no students that witnessed the incident.
“I can’t stress this enough that under no circumstances are weapons allowed on school property by anyone other than authorized officials,” she wrote.
Sterling urged parents, guardians and community members to review the Gun-Free School
Zone Act of 1990 for additional information.
“Though this is an unfortunate event, we will continue to work collaboratively with law
enforcement to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” she stated.
She added that if community members have any questions, they can contact her office at 757-304-5401.
