A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for southwestern Southampton County until 9 p.m.

At 8:28 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located in a line extending from near Radium to near Emporia to near Gaston. Hazards include 60-mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Minor damage to vehicles is possible; expect wind damage to trees and powerlines.

People should remain alert for a possible tornado. If you spot a tornado or get a tornado warning, move to a small, central room or basement in a sturdy structure.

Frequent lightning is occurring with this storm. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
