ZUNI – Vernon Haywood Crumpler, 77, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2021, in his home with family by his side.

Born in Norfolk and brought up in the Berlin area of Southampton County, he was a son of the late Otis Blaine Crumpler Sr. and Emma Lou Martin Crumpler, and predeceased by a special grandmother, Tweedy Mae Crumpler, and a special uncle, Bernie Crumpler. Vernon was also predeceased by two brothers, Otis B. “Mickey” Crumpler Jr. and an infant brother.

Vernon was a retired superintendent for the Virginia Department of Transportation, and a member of Millfield Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and squirrel hunting.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Judy Bradshaw Crumpler; a daughter, Lora Taroli-Vinson (Tripp); a son, Ricky Atkins (Brenda); a brother, Michael Bales (Lorraine); and seven grandchildren, Brooke Arnot (Camron), Staci, Sydney and Lindsey Taroli, Chad and Courtney Vinson and Ethan Atkins; a great-grandson, Bracey Haywood Arnot, due in August; a host of special nieces and nephews; and his special cat, Dink.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 12, in the Crumpler Family Cemetery on Whitefields Mill Drive, Sedley, with Pastor Joe Poe officiating. Per family request, lawn chairs are suggested at the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, where a funeral procession will begin at 3 p.m. to leave for the cemetery.
