COURTLAND – Deacon Florence Bernice Greene Boykins entered into eternal rest on Dec. 17, 2020.

She was born on May 23, 1945, in Southampton County to the late John Jasper and Lucy Ricks Greene. She was the sixth of eight children.

Florence attended Southampton County Training School, graduating in the last class of that school in 1963. In 1966, she married Maynard L. Boykins Jr. and from this union one daughter, Stephanie was born.

Florence joined St. Luke Church at an early age. She served there as a youth sponsor, hospitality chair, member of the choir, trustee chair (until her health failed) and a deacon. Florence retired from Southampton Memorial Hospital after 39 years being employed in food and nutrition services. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Virginia PHA. She served as worthy matron for several years, then treasurer until her health failed.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, John Cleveland, Alexander, Thomas Leslie, Richard Jasper, Roland Greene; and a sister, Annie Greene Harris.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Maynard; her beloved and caring daughter, Stephanie Olds (Henry Jr.); her granddaughter, Alexis, whom she loved and cherished dearly; and one sister, Grace LaVern Stith. She also leaves to cherish her memory her sisters-in-law, Ida Greene, Claudine Greene, Brenda Greene, Anna Rose Buck and Jacqueline Hill. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She had two devoted nieces that supported her during her illness, Vivian Stith-Williams (Robert) and Velma Briggs. Her devoted caregiver, Kathy Tyler not only cared for her, but also brought her joy as she transitioned into the Lord’s hands.

Florence enjoyed helping people during her work tenure at the hospital. She hired many young people to give them a start in employment.

A funeral will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 1 p.m., in William M. Engram Sr. Memorial Chapel in Franklin.

Arrangements are entrusted to Engram Funeral Home.
