James F. Modlin Sr.

BOYKINS — James Franklin “Mott” Modlin Sr. of Boykins, Virginia, passed away on Nov. 12, 2020.

He was born on Oct. 14, 1948, in Boykins to the late Lulian Parker Modlin and Mildred Rideout Modlin. He was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn Carter Modlin.

Mott attended Southampton High School until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Silver Star and many other commendations.

He returned and had a long career with Southampton County Sheriff’s Office. He retired as Lt. Detective after 39 years. His years at the SCSO provided many of the stories he regaled his family and friends with over the years.

Mott was a member of Shiloh Hunt Club for over 40 years. After retirement, he opened Mott’s Feed and Supply in Newsoms to provide dog food, supplies and all the local news (some true and some embellished) to his fellow hunters and friends.

He leaves to cherish his memories and carry on his stories, his daughter, Dee M. Clary (Jason) of Rawlings; his son, Jim Modlin (Cassie) of Sedley; grandchildren, Parker Clary, Dawson Clary, Carter Modlin, Caroline Modlin; sisters, Dianne Burgess (J.T.) and Rhonda Modlin; and godchildren, Robert Poland (April) and Richard Poland (Skylar).

A memorial service will be on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m., at Beechwood Cemetery in Boykins.
