4-H’ers, Cloverbuds able to participate in livestock show

Even in this crazy year of 2020 when so many things are on hold, the general public hopefully has learned one important lesson: Agriculture is essential. People have to eat despite pandemics, tornadoes, droughts, floods and all of the other craziness that we have had in one month. Animals still have to be fed and bred and slaughtered, butchered and prepared. And we are grateful for those involved in this process all along the chain. The 23 4-H’ers and Cloverbuds who were able to complete their livestock projects this summer and hold their livestock shows (despite the Franklin-Southampton County Fair being canceled) know this. And they are excited to learn more about ways to contribute to the food supply chain. Cloverbuds are children between the ages of five and eight who aren’t old enough to compete as 4-H’ers for prizes but were still able to carryout livestock projects. 4-H’ers are age 9 to 19.
This would have been the 40th annual county fair so it was a great year to bring back the lamb shows. There was a lamb show at the first county fair and for many years. However, interest had decreased and the lamb show was traded for a goat show. There were 15 lambs exhibited this year and there are hopes for even more next year! The goat show continued this year as well.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the shows were spread out over two days with breaks between the shows of different species.
The Southampton 4-H Livestock exhibitors are extremely grateful to all of their sponsors, especially this year in the midst of a pandemic.
