Pandemic precautions are in place for vendors, customers

Western Tidewater is gradually easing into resuming everyday activities and one of those is the Market on Main in downtown Franklin. The seasonal favorite has been able to recommence starting this past Wednesday.

Karen Cobb, a manager who helps coordinate the program with the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation, spoke to The Tidewater News about the day’s turnout and set-up.

“They [vendors] did fine. It was a little slow, three or four. We’ll have more this coming Wednesday probably,” said Cobb. “Some come just on Saturdays. Some work other markets.”

In order to open during this pandemic, health precautions have been put in place.

“We have the guidelines and posted those at the market for people to see. I’ve also kept the vendors informed and them sent copies so they’ll be aware. They’re adhering to the guidelines,” she said. “There were already lots of things in place befor using all this, such as handwashing stations and the pavilion.

Cobb added that visitors enter one way and exit another.

As in previous markets, there’ll be seafood, local vegetables and fruits in season and baked goods. People can also preorder through the vendors and pick up at the site.

Both vendors and sponsors are still welcome to participate. Cobb said that four of the latter have already helped to make the market possible this year: Birdsong Peanut Co., Colonial Farm Credit, Farm Bureau of Courtland and Bronco Federal Credit Union.

The market, located at 210 S. Main St., is open every Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.; every Saturday starting May 30 from 9 a.m. to noon.
