What was initially a pilot program at Camp Community College is now in its fourth year of empowering young females.

Through a partnership with Verizon Innovative Learning (VIL) and National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), the college will kick off a new year introducing middle school girls in its service region to subjects in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The latest event will begin on Monday, July 13, at Camp’s Regional Workforce Development Center in Franklin with an array of activities.

Rising sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls will learn about design thinking, 3D printing, augmented reality and social entrepreneurship during the year-long program.

“We want to provide young girls in our service region access to a better future and this program will help them with the tools they need to pursue opportunities that are available to them,” said VIL STEM Camp Director Keisha Nichols, who is also associate professor of Industrial Technology at the college. “Thanks to our partnerships, this program is also free to participants.”

The program will be held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Saturday sessions held once a month throughout the school year from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Breakfast and lunch are provided during the weekday sessions.

Nichols said, “Participants will have access to technological devices, and will experience hands-on project work, interactive guest speakers and field trips.”
