Southampton County Public Schools is suggesting a resource for parents to help them talk with their children about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

InDr. Gwendolyn Shannon’s letter that she sent on Friday to parents, the superintendent states, “Dealing with the news of COVID-19 (coronavirus) can elicit much stress. We want our students to be able to express their feelings related to this issue with a trusted adult. There are resources on the internet that provide information about the virus; however, we want to provide you with a resource, developed by the National Association of Psychologists (NASP) and the National Association of School (NASN), titled ‘Talking to Children about COVID-19 (Coronavirus).’

“This document provides suggestions for specific guidelines for dealing with this situation. Additionally, it provides tips for talking to your child and resources that you may access for more information.”

Shannon concludes that the safety, health and well-being of the students is the highest priority, and hopes the information will be helpful in this time.
