RICHMOND
I am honored to have been recently appointed by Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn to serve as budget conferee for Virginia House of Delegates. I have served on the House of Appropriation Committee for two years, and recently appointed as chairwoman on the Compensation, Retirement and General Government Sub-Committee and chairwoman of the Education Committee.
According to the constitution, Virginia must have a balanced budget. The conferees will finalize/compromise proposed funding/allocations from the Governor, Senate and House of Delegates budget in order to establish a balanced state budget that will start on July 1, 2020. This year, priorities are funding for K-12 education, affordable healthcare, affordable tuition, criminal justice reform and increasing the minimum wage.
The State budget is the most important legislation that is passed by the General Assembly each year. The following members will serve as House conferees: Del. Luke Torian, Del. Mark Sickles, Del. Betsy Carr, Del. David Bulova, Del. Kirk Cox, Del. Barry Knight and Del. Roslyn Tyler.
The Senate conferees are: Sen. Louise Lucas, Sen. Mamie Locke, Sen. Thomas Saslaw, Sen. Janet Howell, Sen. George Barker, Sen. Creed Deeds, Sen. Steven Newman, Sen. Emmet Hanger and Sen. John Edwards.
The General Assembly is scheduled to adjourn on Saturday, March 7.
