COURTLAND — George Thomas Kitchen Jr., 77, passed away on Jan. 29, 2020.

A lifelong resident of Southampton County, he was a son of the late George Thomas Kitchen Sr. and Ferne Turner Kitchen, and was also predeceased by a daughter, Janet Kitchen Crumpler; and a sister, Jeanie Kitchen Darden.

George was the owner of Kitchen’s Grocery in Courtland and Dashiell’s Half Room Showroom in Suffolk. He was a former member of Manry Hunt Club, and enjoyed fishing with Tommy Barham and playing cards with Tye Edwards, James Kello and Eddie Street.

George was a member of Sunbeam Baptist Church.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Ann C. Kitchen; a daughter, Rhonda Kitchen Fabbri (Tommy) of Port Jefferson, Long Island, New York. He was “Big Daddy” to his five grandchildren, Justin Ford, Rachel Sterenberg (Mike), Sara Ford, Daniel Crumpler and Jacob Ford; three great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Judah and Emery Sterenberg; a brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Maryann Coleman; a niece, Jill Darden; and three nephews, Jeff Coleman (Rhonda), Jack Darden and John Paul Darden.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6, in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Hoyle Green officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday in the funeral home, and suggests memorial donations be made to Sunbeam Baptist Church, 31226 Sunbeam Road, Franklin, VA 23851.
