COURTLAND
Riverdale Elementary School honored veterans of armed forces with a special ceremony in which students were asked to invite family members that have served or who are are serving in the military. Riverdale is excited to report that over 70 veterans were recognized and honored.
Students escorted his/her veteran family members into a gymnasium full of students, staff members and guests who were eager to offer praise and recognition for their service to our country. Each student was given an American flag to wave while the veterans were announced. The veterans and active duty members were presented with special tokens of appreciation made by students at RES.
The gymnasium was decorated with a sea of handmade posters by Riverdale students thanking each veteran for their military service. The veterans and active duty members enjoyed several patriotic songs by the Riverdale students under the direction of music teacher, Robin Chappell.
Riverdale was also honored to welcome back a previous teacher, Major Katherine McGowan, to deliver the keynote address to all in attendance. McGowan explained what being a veteran means to her as she served in the Air Force.
Riverdale Elementary was proud to honor all veterans in attendance. We are truly appreciative of their service to our country.
