As a security precaution, the lockdown that has been in effect for Southampton High School has just been extended to Southampton Middle School, according to information provided by Supt. Dr. Gwendolyn Shannon.

Shortly before noon today, a report of a Southampton High School student having a weapon caused the high school to be locked down first. She notified parents and the community that the student had been searched and no weapon had been found.

Lt. Camden Cobb of the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office notified The Tidewater News that no one has been harmed, and that deputies are on scene and working closely with school officials to investigate this incident.

He added that the student in question has been identified and separated from the rest of the students.

Further, a search of the school will be performed by law enforcement and K-9 units.

Shannon also stated she would inform the public when the lockdown is lifted.
