FRANKLIN — Mitchell Powell “Mickey” Gray, 84, passed away on Nov. 14, 2019, in Nansemond Point Rehabilitation and Health Center.

He was a native of Franklin and a son of the late Vernie Ashby and Bessie Powell Gray, and was also predeceased by a brother, Vernie A. Gray Jr.

Mickey was a graduate of Franklin High School and Chowan College. He served in the U.S. Army and had retired from Hercules Inc. after 32 years of service.

Mickey was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, John Mitchell Gray (Cheryl) of Mechanicsville; two sisters, Jean Leggett and Joy Gray (Thatch), both of Suffolk; four nieces, Karen Newton (Michael), Kathy Weber (Greg), Kelly Bowers and Val Gray; one nephew, V. Ashby Gray III; and a special friend, Judy Blythe.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. James H. Hyatt Jr. officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery.\

The reception will follow the service in Franklin Congregational Christian Church.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home, and suggests memorial donations may be made to Franklin Congregational Christian Church or the American Cancer Society.
