On Sept. 29, Riverdale Elementary School hosted its first Healthy School Market Event with The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, thanks to Angela Sproul, director of Southampton County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services and her team.

The event was scheduled to run from 4 to 6 p.m., but all of the produce was gone within the first hour and a half. Ninety-one families were served with cantaloupes, onions, cabbages, white potatoes, apples and oranges.

The second such event took place on Oct. 8 at 4:15 p.m. during parent-teacher conferences. This time, parents and teachers were able to get fresh corn, radishes, carrots, oranges, potatoes, onions and apples. This, too, was another successful event for the Riverdale Elementary School community.
