The six students forming the Southampton High golf team have achieved a first for the school. They are going to the state tournament, which will take place on Oct. 15 at the Williamsburg National Golf Course.

Taking the four best scores totaled the lowest score of 330 enabled the team to win the regional competition on Tuesday at Bide-A-Wee Golf Course in Portsmouth.

Coach William Whitehurst said on Wednesday afternoon, “I’ve taken individual players to state before, but this is the first time I’ve taken a team to state. We’re very excited.”

The team’s record to date, he added, is 10-0.

Josh Williams became the medalist by scoring the lowest at 80. At the first hole, Williams also achieved a birdie, which is earning a score of one stroke under what’s usually expected for a hole on the course.

Hunter Roundtree had 81; Chris Taylor had 83; Bryce Simms had 86; Andrew Brown had 89; and Chase Magette had 93.
