FRANKLIN

A Franklin man was charged with driving under the influence on Sunday after refusing to submit to a breath test.

According to Sgt. Scott Halverson, spokesman for the Franklin Police Department, at approximately 12:51 a.m. on Sunday, a Franklin Police officer stopped a vehicle westbound on Campbell Street, with no headlights illuminated.

Halverson said the driver — identified as Hakeem M. Holmes, 26 — would not cooperate with the officer, refused a breath test, and then reportedly became combative and attempted to assault the officer.

Holmes was then taken to police headquarters where he was taken before the magistrate and charged with DUI, refusal to submit to a breath test, and assault on a law enforcement officer. Neither the officer or the suspect required any medical attention.

The suspect was transported to Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
