COURTLAND — Sherman Lee Joyner Sr., 88, passed away on Sept. 10, 2019, at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.

Born in Southampton County, he was a son of the late William “Billy” Joyner and Essie Blythe Joyner, and was also predeceased by his brother, James William Joyner, and sister-in-law, Iola “Dick” Joyner. Sherman was retired from Suburban Propane and was a member of Hunterdale Baptist Church.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed gardening, yard work and loved horses.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Jean Velvin Joyner; a daughter, Betty Jean Whitby (Thomas); four sons, Lee Joyner (Lisa), Wayne Joyner (Jody), Glenn Joyner (Janet) and David “Shoebox” Joyner; former daughter-in-law, Janet A. Joyner; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Joyner (Josh), Leigh Ann Fillmore (Craig), Brian Joyner (Kelly), Doug Whitby (Ashley), Amanda Whitby, Katie Joyner, Taylor Joyner, Ashley Morris (Dustin), Sara Story (Jake), Lauren Morgan (Lance), Adam Joyner (Bethany) and Abbie Joyner; 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a special grand dog, Lilly.

The family would like to thank his special caregiver, Dorothy Jordan.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Joyner (Sherman’s son) and the Rev. Howard Vinson officiating. Burial will follow in Southampton Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home, and suggests that memorial donations be made to Hunterdale Baptist Church or a favorite charity.
