EMPORIA

A Courtland man died after an automobile collided into his motorcycle early Saturday morning. This information comes from Sgt. Michele Anaya, a spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police.

Anaya announced via a press release that the VSP was called out at 2:15 to investigate a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 95, south of exit 1 (Route 58 – Governor Harrison Parkway). The drivers of a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 2014 Toyota Camry were both traveling northbound on I-95, when the driver of the Camry, Arani Arzate-Zamora, lost control of her vehicle, ran off the roadway and struck the guardrail.

On hitting the rail, the Camry spun back into the traffic lanes and into the path of the Harley motorcycle and its driver, Jonathan Mulder, 51, of the 26000 block of Shady Brook Trail in Courtland. He was thrown off the bike and died on impact. Notification has been made to his family members.

The accident is still under investigation at this time. Arzate-Zamora, 33, of Raleigh, North Carolina, was charged with reckless driving. Alcohol was a contributing factor, and the VSP is awaiting results for further charges.
