The National Weather Service’s Wakefield station has issued a flash flood watch for the city of Franklin, Southampton County and Isle of Wight County, as well as surrounding areas, effective as of 2:06 p.m. on Friday.

This will remain in effect through 4 a.m. Saturday. According to the NWS, a cold front will drop into the region this afternoon and evening. As this occurs, residents can expect thunderstorms with heavy rain to develop this afternoon and evening, with rainfall amounts between one and three inches. Locally higher amounts possible later this evening.

Under the heaviest rainfall, flash flooding is possible. The NWS advises that flash flooding is a very dangerous situation, and that residents should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should such warnings be issued.
