WAKEFIELD

The National Weather Service in Wakefield has announced that a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 8 p.m. today.

A line of storms will affect Franklin, Southampton County, Isle of Wight County, Suffolk and the Greater Hampton Roads region.

At 3:37 p.m., radar has shown strong thunderstorms were located on a line going from Boykins to Smithfield. The storm’s movement was east at 35 mph.

Wind gusts higher than 40 mph are a possibility with these storms. These are able to knock down tree limbs, small or weakened trees and could blow around trash cans, lawn furniture and other lightweight outdoor objects.

Torrential rain is also taking place and could cause localized flooding. Do not, do not, do not drive your vehicle through flood roadways.

Further, lightning is occurring, and can strike more than 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek safe shelter in a building or vehicle.
