A Courtland man died on Thursday as the result of being hit by a vehicle in front of the Southampton County Courthouse.

According to spokesman Lt. Camden Cobb, a Southampton County Deputy was walking toward the courthouse and heard what sounded like an accident on Main Street and soon realized that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. This occurred at approximately 8:35 a.m. Courtland EMS responded and attempted to revive the victim, but he was later pronounced dead.

The man was identified as Daniel Forbes, 73. He was struck by a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup. The driver and only occupant of that vehicle remained on scene and was cooperative with the investigation.

Main Street Courtland was blocked to all traffic between Court and Bride streets for approximately 3-1/2 hours, and reopened early that afternoon.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident. No criminal charges are expected to be sought in this matter, but traffic-related charges are pending. Investigators have ruled out drugs and alcohol as playing a role in this incident. At this time, they have not made a determination on whether or not speed was a factor.

Also, on scene to assist with the incident were Courtland Volunteer Fire Department, Boykins Rescue, Courtland Police Department and VDOT.
