Dive team recovers body from Nottoway

The body of an unidentified male, believed to be a victim of drowning in the Nottoway River, was recovered around 9:30 a.m. today, July 15, according to Maj. Gene Drewery, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 4:44 p.m. on Sunday, the department had gotten a call of a fisherman who had been wading, but then had been swept away in the Nottoway River near Sebrell. Drewery stated that there was no floatation device of any kind on the person.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, the following agencies participated in the rescue attempt: The Virginia Game Commission; the Virginia State Police; Franklin Fire and Rescue; Courtland VFD; Courtland Rescue; Capron VFD; and Capron Rescue.

The body is being transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for cause of death and identification.
