Donald G. Carter Sr.

SUFFOLK — Donald G. Carter Sr., 93, died on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at 11 a.m., in Autumn Care of Suffolk, following a brief illness. He was born on Sept. 24, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He leaves as his legacy five daughters, Janie Carter, Patsy Carter-Walker, Audra Carter-Wilkins, Linda Darden (Oliver), Mildred Mariner and her former husband, Jonathan Mariner; three sons, Donald G. Carter Jr. (Jeri); Conley Carter and Ronald Carter and his former wife, Jacqueline Scott; a stepson, Robert Q. Taylor; and many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, community and friends.

Donald was a devoted father and husband, married to the love of his life, the late Mildred Clarice Parker-Carter. He also was a devoted grandfather and friend to everyone.

He shared the gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone down to his last days.

Donald proudly served in the U.S. Navy. During most of his four years in the Navy, Donald served on the USS Great Lakes, a naval logistics battalion war ship, and received three Navy decorations for his valiant service.

He owned, operated and retired from DG Carter’s Plumbing and Electric Service, which diligently served Southampton County for 25 years.

However, no description of Donald G. Carter can ever be complete without including his service to the Lord. He became a deacon of Cedar Grove Baptist Church under the Rev. G.W. Johnson, and diligently served his church in several capacities, including president of the Senior Usher Board, superintendent, and assistant superintendent of Cedar Grove’s Sunday School. Donald’s work in the church and in his community led to other recognitions, including president and vice president of the East Southampton Sunday School. He was also deacon, superintendent and assistant superintendent at 6th Avenue Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida. Donald ended his service to the Lord at Pulaski Baptist Church under the Rev. Dr. Robert E. Rogers.

Viewing is from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, in Pulaski Baptist Church, 6431 Carrsville Highway, Carrsville, Virginia. The service begins at 11 a.m. with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Robert E. Rogers, delivering the eulogy, and the Rev. Dr. Michael J. Johnson Sr. of Pensacola, officiating. The burial will follow later at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk.
