Meherrin Elementary School is taking learning to a new level. The school has been awarded funding for new picnic tables in support of their “Take Learning Outside” program. The goal of “Take Learning Outside” is to provide an additional learning environment for the students. At Meherrin, it is the desire to increase the quality and quantity of outdoor learning experiences for students.

Research shows that fresh air and mobility stimulates the brain to increase learning. Also, learning outside provides adequate space for messy and engaging projects, offering an additional setting to read and complete assignments.

The outcome of this project will increase learning, provide hands-on education, and most importantly, provide an additional learning environment outside of the classroom and the school building itself for students to complete assignments. This new endeavor is expected to cause an increase in science, reading, and math SOL scores.

There is more to come from MES.
