COURTLAND

Several hundred people in and around Courtland were reportedly without power on Thursday, which was due to an accident that happened across the street from the Southampton County Courthouse on Main Street.

Courtland Police Sgt. Hunt Story on Friday updated The Tidewater News about the incident, which he said occurred at 1:40 p.m. The officer said two vehicles were involved, but there were no injuries or required treatment. The driver of the car that hit the utility pole was assessed and then released. Story said that person was charged because “a contributing factor [to the accident] was driver in attention.”

The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene, according to Lt. Camden Cobb, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office. Cobb said the Virginia Department of Transportation had organized a detour because that area of Main Street had to be closed.

Jeremy Slayton of Media Relations with Dominion Energy said the power went down about 1:43 p.m., and 229 Dominion Energy customers were affected. Restoration was completed by 9:20 p.m. Slayton added that the line serves as a delivery point for customers of Community Electric Cooperative, which is based in Windsor.

Jonathan Thompson, chief operations officer for CEC, confirmed hat 683 of its members also lost power, but that a set of diesel generators was started and those customers had electricity again at 3:30 p.m. When Dominion had finished its work, Thompson added, CEC went fully back online at 10:30 p.m.
