SOUTH BOSTON — Joseph D. East, formerly of Franklin, Virginia, passed away on Nov. 16, 2018, in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

He was born on Nov. 17, 1930, in South Boston, Virginia, and completed his undergraduate degree from Hampden-Sydney College in 1951. He was drafted into the Army Corps of Engineers in 1952, and received his engineering degree from the University of Virginia in 1957. Joe retired after 35 years with Union Camp Corporation in Franklin as an engineering manager.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Shirley Perkins; and his sisters, Sarah, Anne and Martha.

Joe was devoted husband and family man who was an avid sports fan, loved sports cars, bridge, playing golf and traveling. He was an active member of the Rotary Club and the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Franklin.

Joe is survived by his son, Mike East (Pam) of Rock Hill; daughter, Sarah Baldwin (Dennis) of Raleigh, North Carolina; granddaughter, Maggie Tindall (John) of Fort Mill, South Carolina; and his great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Addie Kate Tindall.

The graveside service will be on Saturday, May 25, at 11 a.m., at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston with the Rev. Don Bryant officiating.

The family will receive friends at the family farm in Aarons Creek, Virginia, after the service.
