IWA defeats Broadwater Academy

Isle of Wight Academy improved its record to 9-3, including 4-0 in the Metro Athletic Conference, with a doubleheader sweep, 12-0 and 12-2, against Broadwater Academy here on April 16.

In Game 1, Bryce Daniels was 2-for-2 with 4 RBI and Andrew Holt was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

IWA scored four runs on two hits in the first inning, when they sent 10 batters to the plate. The Chargers also scored four more in the second, also on two hits.

Holt held Broadwater to two hits in four innings pitched. He walked a batter and struck out three to earn the win.

In Game 2, senior Josh Savage was 2-for-3 with a grand slam, Holt went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and reserve Kody Kosiorek was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.

Starter Hunter Hayden struggled to find his control, allowing two earned runs and walking three batters without collecting an out in the first inning. Tyler Watkins came on to throw five shutout innings, walking two and fanning six.

IWA still trailed 2-0 in the third inning when they scored three runs on a hit — Holt’s double, which scored two runners. Kosiorek also scored on an error after reaching on a walk.

Watkins led off by reaching on an error. Daniels followed with a single. Both scored on Kosiorek’s double with no outs.

Praither was hit by a pitch and Colyer singled to load the bases with no outs. Boyce flied to second and Holt flied to first base, setting the stage for Savage’s bases-loaded round-tripper.

The visiting Vikings dropped their record to 6-8, 2-6 in the Metro. The visitors committed seven errors on the day while collecting just four hits.

The Chargers held on to sixth place in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association’s Division II Poll. They have accumulated 31 points, earned based on their record and their opponents’ records.

Ryan Boyce and Bryce Daniels remained among the leaders in conference batting rankings.

Boyce is 16-for-32 for an even .500 average, as is Daniels (15-for-30).

Senior Noah Colyer is batting .438; juniors Andrew Holt and Cole Praither are hitting .425 and .395, respectively.

The Chargers returned to action with a road game on Tuesday at Christchurch in Mathews. They host Greenbrier Christian, the No. 1 team in Division II with 69 points, on Thursday, April 25.

Games begin at 4:30 p.m.
