FRANKLIN — Hubert Bridges Jr., 78, passed away after a long illness on April 11, 2019.

Born in Southampton County and a longtime resident of Franklin, he was a son of the late Hubert Bridges and Ambra Crumpler Bridges, and was predeceased by Gordon Wilson and Mary Scott Bridges, who raised Hubert at birth, who he called Uncle Gordon and Mama. He was also predeceased by a sister, Nancy Carter; and brother, Glenn Bridges.

He was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy and Franklin High School. He attended Virginia Tech for a short while.

In later years, he attended Paul D. Camp Community College to further his career at Union Camp. He was a Class-A millwright, and retired from Union Camp in 1999 with 40 years of service as supervisor in planning.

Hubert was a member of Urquhart Gillette Camp 1471 Sons of Confederate Veterans and Southampton Grays. He was a history buff, loved woodworking, gardening and a Hokie fan.

He was a member of Hunterdale Christian Church.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved and devoted wife of 24 years Linda Hornok Bridges; his dog, Neka “Monk, Monk;” daughter, Ambra G. Bridges; son, Andrew “Andy” M. Bridges (Linda); step-children, Roger Ybarra (Bridgotte) and Michael Ybarra (Johanna); step-mother, Mary Cabell Bridges; sister, Mary Hu (Ranae); brother, Warren Bridges (Nancy); sister-in-law, Patsy A. Bridges; cousins, Shirley Wentz and Chris (Steve) Cole; grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary, John and Lindsey; step-grandchildren, Mikayla, Devin, Cody; and many cousins, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, in Wright Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Wright officiating. Burial will follow the service in Riverside Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday in the funeral home, and suggests memorials be made to Harvest Christian Fellowship, 27002 Smith’s Ferry Road, Franklin; or Hunterdale Volunteer Fire Department, 201 Delaware Road, Franklin, VA 23851.
