COURTLAND — Elwood Dennison “Woody” Flythe, 91, passed away on April 7, 2019.

Born in Hampton, he was a son of the late Russell Seth and Sarah Margaret Barham Flythe, and was also predeceased by a brother, Russell Flythe, and a daughter-in-law, Amy Flythe.

He was a graduate of Warwick High School, Newport News Apprentice School, and a World War II Army veteran serving as a Special Guard for the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Elwood was a retired design engineer for Newport News Shipyard with 45 years of service, and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Shari Clifton Flythe; two daughters, Shari Lucille Davenport (Donald) of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Linda Leigh Watlet (James) of Courtland; two sons, Michael Barham Flythe (Debbie) and William Howard “Buddy” Flythe, both of Courtland; three sisters, Sarah Telstad, Barbara Hounshell and Iris Greene; eight grandchildren. Matthew Flythe, Will Flythe, Paul Watlet, James Watlet, Michael Flythe, Diane “Beth” Engelking, Christopher Davenport and Krista Bond; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The memorial service with military honors will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 12, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with Jim Councill and Tim Cormany officiating.
