The Lady Indians began the 2019 season on March 12 against Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. The Indians came up short, losing 3-0 in the season-opener. It was a defensive battle from the start: NSA scored two runs in the top of the second off a pair of hits and a pair of errors by the Indians’ defense. The only other run of the day was scored by a solo home run in the top of the sixth.

Despite putting some pressure on NSA by loading the bases in the top of the second and leaving runners on second and third on the bottom of the third, the Lady Indians could not generate enough offense to put any runs on the board. This is an extremely tough team to start off the season with. We will face NSA again in April, and will focus on cleaning up the defense and getting the sticks going to put some runs on the board.

The Lady Indians bounced back in Thursday’s game against Nandua. They got the first win in the books for the 2019 season defeating the Lady Warriors 3-0 in seven innings in another defensive battle between these two teams.

Sam Stephenson was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts and plenty of support from the Lady Indians’ defense, who went errorless in a combined effort for the shutout. The biggest difference was the ability to put the ball in play and make things happen.

The three runs scored by the Lady Indians happened in the top of the third with two outs. Kaylan Cales got things going with a single followed by a stolen base. Greene put her first RBI of the season in the books by hitting a triple, scoring Cales. Maddie Simmons followed Greene with a single scoring Greene. Simmons was the final run of the inning scoring on a pair of errors by Nandua. Both Greene and Simmons had a great day at the plate: Greene went 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple, and Simmons went 2-for-4.

The Lady Indians finished up opening week traveling to Brunswick last Friday. This week, the Lady Indians will travel to South Hill to face district rivals, the Park View Lady Dragons.

The next home game will be on Monday, March 26, against Sussex.
