Chowan Hawks lose CIAA opening game, 77-74

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

The Chowan University Hawks seeded No. 6 of the northern division of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association were facing the 7th seeded Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls of the southern division of the CIAA, in the CIAA Basketball Tournament at Bogangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina. The game was played on Monday.

The Hawks seemed to be having no problem with the Golden Bulls, and led in scoring for the majority of the game. At the half the Hawks were up 30-26. At the 7:02 mark in the second half, the Hawks were up 12 points with a score of 57-45. But the Golden Bulls would not throw in the towel and, in the final seconds of the game, sent the game into overtime after scoring a 3-point basket to tie the score at 67 all.

In overtime, the Golden Bulls led in scoring, but at the :22 mark the Hawks’ Gus Rowland tied the score at 74 all after connecting on a 3-point basket. After a time out by the Golden Bulls and having possession of the ball, Roddric Ross scored on a 3-point basket in the final seconds to give them the win with the score of 77-74.

In scoring for the Hawks they had three players in double figures. They were Gus Rowland with 24 points, Xavier Young with 19 points and Michael Kelly with 13 points.
