A Newsoms woman who was reported missing to the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office on Friday is still being sought by law enforcement officials. The agency released information to media on Saturday, asking for the public’s help in finding Cynthia Carver of Everett Street in Newsoms.

As reported online at www.thetidewaternews.com early that afternoon, department spokesman Maj. Gene Drewery said the office got a call on Friday at 1 p.m. from Carver’s mother, Ann, who was concerned about her welfare. Evidence of blood was found by deputies, who then secured the residence and got a warrant for a detailed search.

Carter, 34, was last seen on Thomaston Road in Newsoms around 9 p.m. on Thursday.

On Monday, Drewery called a press conference to say the office is again reaching out to media in getting out the word about Carver’s disappearance.

“The Critically Missing Adult Alert that was established is set up to automatically end 12 hours after issued,” said Drewery, adding that the department is looking at the option to put it out again.

“We want to keep this in the forefront and need some help from the public,” he said.

Part of the search includes being able to examine the woman’s social media accounts for clues, but each requires a warrant, which takes time.

‘We’ve [also] contacted friends, associates, work to interview people … obviously family members,” said Drewery. He added that Carver is the mother of two daughters, and neither was with her when she went missing.

Investigators are also trying to determine who was the man she was supposedly going to meet on Thursday night. Drewery said that detail comes from a family member who said they overheard Carver sharing that with somebody on the phone. The FBI is working with the phone company to secure that detail.

In addition to talking to people, the agency is seeking as clues Carver’s missing cell phone, a plain black wallet and a black handbag with strap and handles with gold emblems.

The spokesman said Ann noticed that Carver’s vehicle was still in the driveway on Friday, which was the day when she was to report to her new job at the Deerfield Correctional Center. Going to the house, the mother discovered the back door was open. She then called 911. The deputies went in to make sure the house was empty, which was when the evidence was found. Again, the site was secured by them and they worked to get the warrant.

Asked if any weapons were found, the spokesman said a knife was discovered.

The search for Carver continued until 3 to 4 a.m. on Saturday, resuming that morning from 8 a.m. to p.m., and again on Sunday, said Drewery, adding that the office will next search the rivers and area ponds.
