Franklin team going to state bowl on Feb. 23

FRANKLIN

The past several months of studying and practicing have been paying off for the members of the Franklin High School Scholastic Bowl team. On Saturday, the team placed second at the Region A/B Tournament in Windsor High School. The students were reportedly 3-2 in the round robin tournament for beating William Campbell High School twice and Stonewall Jackson High School once. They also lost to Stonewall and Rappahannock.

This moves Franklin and Rappahannock to the State Scholastic Bowl, which will be on Saturday, Feb. 23, at The College of William and Mary. The two other schools in this final four are from Honaker and George Wythe.

Brandon Yanna, who coaches the students, described them as “a very young team. We have one senior, and the rest of freshmen, sophomores and juniors. They’re up and coming.”

Devlin Moody

Yanna added that the season, which began last fall, has been a long one, and the first match was on Oct. 30. Practice sessions would take place twice a week around the students’ schedules.

The most recent event was an intense one, playing in five straight matches, which took place in four hours. The team is composed of Devlin Moody, who Yanna said “led the charge;” Anthony Bunn, Karina Espino, Ayanna Hudson, Alexis Gorgei, Dalton and Pacey Virtue. They all described the most recent event and their win as “nerve-wracking and very exciting.”
