The westbound lanes of Southampton Parkway (U.S. Route 58) near Capron Elementary School were closed Wednesday morning for approximately 30 to 35 minutes as the result of a two-vehicle accident with injuries that involved an overturned vehicle.

Lt. Camden Cobb, a spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, said the department was called at 8:55 a.m. Deputies responded to assist with traffic control, but the Virginia State Police handled the investigation of the accident. All lanes have since reopened.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya, spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police said that the accident resulted when a 2018 Nissan Rogue driven by Sonia Waicul of Cummings, Georgia came through the school zone and struck a 2019 Dodge Ram truck, causing it to overturn. The driver of the truck was transported to Emporia Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Waicul was charged with reckless driving.

Two tow trucks were used to clear the scene.
