A combination of motorist feedback and a delay in the installation of the new statewide communications software will allow the Virginia Department of Transportation to extend the operation of the Highway Advisory Radio in Hampton Roads. Delivery and installation, originally scheduled for February, will now take place in late spring.

The HAR, which ceased operation on Jan. 6, resumed operation at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

This will be welcome news to motorists who have expressed their appreciation for the travel information tool.

During the extension, VDOT will explore alternative opportunities to provide hands-free options for motorists to receive travel updates. These alternatives have not yet been identified.

VDOT urges motorists to not use their phones while driving and to plan their commute by using VDOT’s free traffic information tools:

• Download the free 511 Virginia app

• Visit the 511Virginia website or dial 511 for traffic information on your phone

• Listen to Highway Advisory Radio 1680AM

• Call the Traffic Line at 757-361-3016

While on the road, drivers are encouraged to look for traffic conditions on any of the 200 electronic message boards across the region.
