Although the Lady Broncos lost in points, 55-47, to the visiting Lady Cougars on Wednesday evening, the game felt more like a win to the hosts.

Coming late into the game near the end of the third period, the score was 53-21 in favor of Surry High School. Franklin High School’s team got two extra points with 1:17 left, and the scored stayed at 53-23 to the end of that quarter.

Within 10 seconds of the start of the last period, the Lady Broncos began their climb to narrow the lead, and also kept the visitors from scoring through the first half. At the 5:10 mark is when the FHS girls started showing everybody how well they can play. Their rapid moves and teamwork enabled the girls to make several baskets in less than a minute that put them up to 38 points. The supporting crowd stood up and cheered them on each time the Lady Broncos scored.

The Lady Cougars scored only once more at 4:32, putting them at 55-38. After which, the FHS team continued its scoring to the end. Coming in from the court, they were happily welcomed by Coach Mona Sumblin and teammates.

“Even though it wasn’t a ‘W’ in the books, that was a win for us,” she said afterward.

Having confidence in themselves — believing that they can play well and win — is key to their successful playing, Sumblin continued, and noted how the crowds got behind them with their cheering and shouts of support.

“I’m proud of the team,” she said.

The Lady Broncos go to Sussex Central High School on Wednesday, Dec. 12; play begins at 5:30 p.m. They’ll return to home court on Wednesday, Dec. 19 to host their arch-rivals from Southampton High School; that game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Cougars overtake Broncos

The boys basketball team followed, also meeting against Surry. Although the hosts had gotten the first two baskets within the first 20 seconds of the game, the visitors started making baskets and passing. By the end of the first period, it was 14-10 in favor of the Cougars. Then at the end of the second, 31-18.

The game concluded in Surry’s favor, 60-41.

Broncos coach Robby Cutchins said, “We played some great defense in the third and start of the fourth until Surry put 10 [points] on us. Overall, it was a good solid effort by the boys. The kids fought hard.”

They were scheduled to visit Surry on Saturday. The Broncos are to visit Sussex on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m.; and then host rivals Southampton High Indians at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19.
