A Newport News man hunting deer on Wednesday morning in the vicinity of Booth and Sadler roads near Ivor died from an accidental discharge of a firearm. This was confirmed by Lee Walker, a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Walker received his information from Virginia Conservation Police, which responded to an 8:08 a.m. call about the incident. They had been aided by the Southampton County Sheriff’s Department, which had gotten a call at 7:56 a.m., six minutes after the shooting. Deputies responded to the scene and then turned the investigation over to the State Conservation Police, as it was believed to have taken place while hunting.

William Huskey Jr., 69, was reportedly walking with another hunter on private land when the shooting occurred.

“One of the hunter’s firearms accidentally discharged, striking the other hunter [Huskey,] who was pronounced dead from his injuries at the scene,” Walker wrote in response to inquiries about the matter.

He added that the firearm was a 12-gauge shotgun, and also said the two men were wearing blaze orange at the time they were hunting.

Walker said the information he provided is a preliminary report, and the incident is still under investigation, and updates would be made when new information becomes available.
