COURTLAND — Barbara Lee Williams Harris, 89, departed this earthly life on Nov. 12, 2018, in St. Francis Nursing Center, Newport News, Virginia.

Barbara Lee
Williams Harris

She was the third child of seven born to Herman Williams Sr. and Della Lou Crocker Williams, Courtland, Virginia.

As a young child she accepted Christ as her savior, joined Bryant Baptist Church and there she remained until her death. In her earlier years, she was a choir and usher member and later participated in Vacation Bible School and served on the Hospitality and Kitchen ministries.

In 1949, Barbara was joined in marriage to Henry Cranting Harris, aka Peter, who predeceased her in 1983. From that union was born their only child, Francine Delbra. Barbara was blessed with two grandsons, Geoffrey and Gerard Silver, whom she undoubtedly adored.

Barbara received her formative education in Southampton County at Ridley School, and continued on to graduate from Southampton County Training School in 1947.

While being a loving wife and nurturing mother, she completed the nursing program in 1956 at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia. With this LPN license, she worked at both Franklin hospitals (Raiford Memorial and Southampton Memorial) for 35 years, retiring in 1992.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, four siblings; Emma Boykins, Mary Porter, Herman Williams II and Wilbert Williams; and one grandson, Geoffrey.

In addition to her daughter and grandson, cherished memories will forever be in the hearts of one sister, Eunice Wilson, and one brother, Milton Williams (Goldie,) both of Suffolk, Virginia; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Price of Richmond, and Mildred Jenkins, of Victoria, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The funeral will be on Monday, Nov. 19 at noon in Bryant Baptist Church, 233785 Bryant Church Road, Courtland. Mrs. Harris’ remains will rest in church for viewing at 10 a.m. The committal and benediction will be at Mount Tabor Church Cemetery in Newsoms, Virginia.
