This year’s Election Day is considered by many people to be crucial because seats in Congress are at stake. Chiefly, there could be a shift in power from Republican to Democrat control on the federal level. Or, there could even be a surge in conservatives. How would that happen?

You, the voter.

In Southampton County, city of Franklin and Isle of Wight County, residents get to decide on a senator: Keep Tim Kaine, a Democrat, or choose either the Republican Corey Stewart or Libertarian Matt Waters.

As for the House of Representatives, Bobby Scott, a Democrat, is the unchallenged incumbent choice for Franklin and Isle of Wight; Southampton can decide on keeping incumbent Donald McEachin or choosing either Republican Ryan McAdams or Libertarian Pete Wells.

Lest we forget, all localities are to vote on two state constitutional amendments, and both concern potential tax exemptions.

On the local level, there is another important issue on the ballot. Specifically, in Southampton County the question is who to choose for treasurer: Rhonda V. Griffin or Cynthia J. Edwards.

Again, those of you qualified to vote get the right to choose.

Some residents might think, “Oh, it’s only treasurer. How important is that?”

Very. This person will oversee the incoming and outgoing of revenue that keeps the county going — paying bills, payroll and the like. Settling debts and putting cash in the bank don’t happen by magic. These things take a capable and responsible person to handle.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
