COURTLAND — John Powell “Jack” Pittman died peacefully on Oct. 30, 2018, at the age of 83.

A native of Capron, Virginia, he was predeceased by his parents, Gladys Marks Pittman and Virginius Sebrell Pittman; and his brothers, Virginius S. Pittman Jr. of Franklin, and Robert E. Pittman of Snellville, Georgia.

Mr. Pittman was a graduate of Courtland High School, Randolph Macon Academy and Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1956.

A civil engineering degree took him to employment in Illinois, Texas and Aruba. He returned to Virginia in 1960 to begin his career with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation in Petersburg, Virginia; Louisville, Kentucky; and Macon, Georgia.

After retirement, he moved back to his beloved Southampton County, where he enjoyed being outside hunting, fishing, planting and nurturing trees.

Mr. Pittman was a member of the Davis-Ridley Hunt Club and a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Ina Ridley Pittman; two children, Virginius Sebrell “Vee” Pittman II (Anne) of Courtland, and Margaret Pittman Green (Ward) of Roswell, Georgia; also five grandchildren, Jordan Ridley Green, Sumner Willingham Green, Edward Jackson Green III, John Powell Pittman II and James Scott Hotchkiss Pittman.

The funeral will be on Monday, Nov. 5 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Franklin at 1:30 p.m.

The celebration of Jack’s life will be held immediately after the service in the Back Porch & Grille at The Village at Woods Edge in Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church or the VMI Foundation.

The family would like to acknowledge the loving care provided to Jack by Jocelyn Adams, Javon Eley, Deidre Hambrick and the staff at East Pavilion.
