Students too wrapped up in electronic devices

To the Editor:

I am writing to the editor for an assignment and extra credit opportunity if this gets on the newspaper. This assignment is for Paul D. Camp Community College.

I am writing to you about the S.P. Morton reading SOL scores being low. I feel that the students in these elementary, middle and high schools do not grasp or interpret the information they are given to learn because they are so wrapped up in the devices that the schools give them.

I do agree that using technology in the classroom is important, but children that young can not sit at a computer or have an iPad in their hand and expect them to grasp the information that is being thrown their way.

I think that students should stick to the hand writing of notes and carry around actual textbooks because there are studies showing that students learn better when they write down their notes with pen and paper instead of typing or highlighting from a powerpoint.
