Southampton school nutrition program lauded

COURTLAND
The Southampton County School Board on Monday announced that the school division’s Nutrition Department, led by Cheryl Bowers, was the recipient of the 2018 Dorothy S. McAuliffe School Nutrition Award for “the critical role she [Bowers] and the entire school nutrition team play in getting children the nutrition they need to fuel their bodies and brains.

Cheryl Bowers, at right, was presented the Dorothy S. McAuliffe School Nutrition Award by Supt. Dr. Gwendolyn Shannon. The honor also included a $5,000 that will be used on the middle school level.

The criteria to meet feature the following:

  • School breakfast — At least 70 percent of students who quality for free or reduced meals and eat school lunch are also eating school breakfast.
  • Afterschool meals — The division is sponsoring and serving meals/snacks through the At-Risk Afterschool Child and Adult Care Food Program, if eligible.
  • Summer meals — The division is sponsoring and serving meals through its Summer Food Service Program or the National School Lunch Program Seamless Summer Option, also if eligible.

Following a presentation of the award by Supt. Dr. Gwen to Bowers, the cafeteria managers were also lauded “for their hard work, commitment and contributions” toward receiving the award.

The managers are: Phyllis Turner of Southampton High School; Raquel Locklear of Southampton Middle School; Nannie Harris of Capron Elementary School; Deborah Smith of Meherrin Elementary School; Kelly Fowler of Nottoway Elementary School; and Valerie Mason of Riverdale Elementary School.

Not only were Bowers and staff recognized, but a $5,000 grant was also included, and that money will be used on the middle school level.
