EXMORE
Hunter Edwards scored twice as Isle of Wight Academy held Broadwater to 44 yards of total offense, routing the Vikings 50-6 in Exmore on Saturday.
Ryan Boyce was 6-for-8 passing for 122 yards and ran for a score.
IWA wasted no time in setting a tempo against the host Vikings (2-3.) On the game’s first play from scrimmage, from their own 46, Boyce found Josh Savage streaking downfield and the wideout was hauled down 10 yards from pay-dirt.
Teammate Edwards finished the job, running it in from that point. Kicker Tre Powell’s PAT made it 7-0.
Three plays later, Broadwater fumbled and Edwards recovered, giving IWA the ball at the Viking 28. Edwards and longtime backfield mate Cameron Riblet, returning from a leg injury, shared the workload, setting the Chargers up at the Broadwater 1-yard line. Boyce finished that drive with a plunge into the end zone. A 2-point conversion made it 15-0 in favor of IWA.
On Broadwater’s next drive, IWA had all but stopped their opponents without a first down when a penalty on the Chargers gave the home team new life near midfield.
A play later, quarterback Brant Bloxom connected with teammate Gunnar Gustafson on a 53-yard pass play. The conversion run was unsuccessful, making the score 15-6.
The Vikings’ conquest continued when IWA mishandled the kickoff, giving Broadwater the ball again near midfield.
Even a pass interference penalty on an IWA defender couldn’t sustain that drive, however, and the Vikings punted the ball away.
IWA began its next possession at its own 20, but Edwards changed the tide with a 47-yard run on first down, giving the Chargers a new set of downs at the Broadwater 33. Boyce found Riblet for 12 yards and Edwards rumbled for 21 yards for the touchdown.
Riblet had a hand in IWA’s next points. Broadwater took possession at its own 14 and, two plays later, Riblet picked off a Bloxom pass and ran it back 15 yards for a touchdown. Powell’s PAT made it 29-6 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second period, Boyce found trusty receiver Odin Bristol on two key passes to maintain possession.
The senior signal-caller also hit Edwards for 17 yards, setting up Savage’s run from 8 yards out.
Edwards finished the game with 106 yards on 6 carries.
Riblet hauled in another Boyce aerial for a TD later in the quarter. Colby Williams capped a 31-yard, five-play drive with a 14-yard run. Powell’s PAT closed the scoring.
Odin Bristol led the IWA defense with 12 tackles. Riblet added six.
IWA was ranked fifth in the Oct. 2 Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II Poll.
The No. 4 team, Norfolk Christian, lost Saturday to Blue Ridge School, 48-20, to drop to 2-3 on the year.
The Chargers (4-2) travel to Chatham, Virginia, for a game Friday versus Hargrave Military Academy.
